He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical University of Warsaw (now the Medical University of Warsaw) in 1969. Doctorate in 1975, habilitation in 1987, academic title of professor - 1995. Specialist in general surgery, clinical transplantation and oncological surgery. European expert in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery (FEBS) .

Main research interests: short bowel syndrome; acute pancreatitis; intraoperative ultrasound of the liver; laparoscopic surgery; reconstruction of the bile ducts; deceased and living donor liver transplantation; tumors of the liver and bile ducts; other cancers of the gastrointestinal tract.
Full member of the Polish Academy of Sciences; Corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Learning, member of the Warsaw Scientific Society.
Honorary member of 9 foreign scientific societies and 5 Polish scientific societies. In 2001-2003 - President of the Polish Transplant Society, 2011- 2013 President of the Society of Polish Surgeons, 2016-2017 President of European Surgical Association , Doctor Honoris Causa Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce (2019)
Author or co-author of 537 works, editor or co-editor of 70 books, 772 lectures at congresses.
Promoter of 12 doctoral dissertations, tutor of 8 habilitation theses, 10 employees obtained the academic title of professor.
Awards: Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Awards of the Minister of Health, Minister of Science and Higher Education, Academic Palms of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of France, medal of Pope Francis "Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice" and many other distinctions.
