Prof. dr hab. n. med. Andrzej Borówka

He graduated from the Medical University of Warsaw (now the Medical University of Warsaw) in 1969. He has been a specialist in general surgery since 1975. In the same year, he started working under the supervision of prof. dr hab. Tadeusz Krzeski at the Urology Department of the Provincial Hospital (currently Prof. Witold Orłowski Hospital in Warsaw). In 1979, this department became the seat of the Urology Clinic of the Medical Center of Postgraduate Education (CMKP). He obtained the title of specialist urologist in 1978. In 1979 he was awarded the title of doctor, and in 1982 - habilitation.

In the years 1981-1995 he was the head of the Department of Urology at the Medical University of Warsaw. He received the academic title of professor in 1989. From 1995 head of the Urology Department of the Central Railway Hospital (currently: Międzyleski Szpital Specjalistyczny, MSS). Since 1997, the head of the Urology Clinic (KU) CMKP located at the Hospital of prof. W. Orłowski.

In 2011, he established the urology department at the Hospital of Fryderyk Chopin European Health Center (ECZ) in Otwock. This branch became part of KU CMKP.

Prof. Andrzej Borówka has been a member of the Polish Urological Society since 1975. In the years 1984–1997, together with his closest associates, he organized and conducted a series of Children's Urology Symposiums, in which also eminent pediatric urologists from abroad were lecturers.

For 12 years he was the chairman of the Warsaw branch (now Mazowiecki) of the PTU. In 1992, he initiated the establishment of the Endourology and ESWL Section within the PTU - for 8 years he chaired this Section and conducted a number of Endourology Symposia attended by well-known foreign lecturers. In 1996, he inspired the establishment of the Prof. Tadeusz Krzeski, recognized so far as the most prestigious scientific distinction of PTU, awarded annually to the authors of the best doctoral dissertations. In the years 2000-2008 he was the president of PTU. In 1992-2000 a delegate of PTU to the Société Internationale d'Urologie, in 1997-2004 a delegate of PTU to the EBU, and in 1998-2002 a member of the Strategy Planning Office European Association of Urology (EAU).

In 1992, he became a national consultant in the field of urology - after 20 years he resigned from this function. In the years 2001-2007 he was a member of the Central Committee for Degrees and Titles, and in 2005-2016 he was a member of the Scientific Council of the Minister of Health.

Prof. A. Borówka was the supervisor of specialization studies in urology, the supervisor in doctoral dissertations and the habilitation supervisor, as well as the reviewer in doctoral and postdoctoral dissertations as well as in the procedure for awarding the academic title of professor.

Prof. A. Borówka introduced a number of innovative surgical methods and original modifications of several commonly used methods of surgical treatment to Polish urology.

The main areas of scientific and professional interests of prof. A. Borówki were and still are oncological urology, endourology and teaching urology. He is the author or co-author of over 370 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed medical scientific journals in Poland and abroad, and about 50 chapters in books, as well as several hundred summaries of congress reports.
